Dunajské luhy Landscape Protected Area
An Inland River Delta
- Location: Slovak - Hungarian section of the Danube from Bratislava to the Vl’kolélsky ostrov island in the district Komárno, southwestern Slovakia
- Size: 12,284 hectares
- Established: 1998
The shimmering rove beetle crawls slowly along the massive trunk of dead oak wood reaching far into the oxbow lake of the inland river delta. A beaver pops through the water surface, shaking off a water lily from his nose. He examines the surroundings, and inhales the divine scent of a nearby orchid in full bloom, before he paddles toward the massive trunk in search of suitable driftwood for his latest construction project.
The Dunajské luhy Protected Landscape Area consists of five separate parts. This unique area, situated on a natural levee of the Danube, is one of the largest inland river deltas in Europe.
The system of natural levees, depressions and the accumulation of a dense network of river branches are the most significant characteristic of the Dunajské luhy Protected Landscape Area. But the area also includes floodplain forests, wetlands, meadows and water bodies, such as lakes, oxbow lakes, ponds and streams.More
